'EMOJI NATION' BRINGS COMMUNICATION & ART TOGETHER » BLOG

Emoji’s aren’t now the bread-and-butter of social media. But somehow, the emotions, thoughts and feelings of nameless, sometimes faceless characters in art have been portrayed in the same way. Ukranian artist Nastya Nudnik has gone a step further in using emojis (whether it’s for humour, or a deeper political message is up to you) and put the little icons from a variety of social media into a number of paintings across the ages.
‘Emoji Nation’ is literally, the collision of two different ages, merging the different ways we have communicated over the years. Considering the throttling-grip social media has on our lives, this was both inevitable and comical.
Commenting on the merging of the two ideas, Nudnik noted how art was a huge part of her life and “concerning Emoji Nation, I think I gained sudden clarity. I adore apopheia effects” (seeing something meaningful in random things) “thus I drew a parallel between emojis and high art.” Evidently, the ‘Sims’ video-game element brings a new sense of meaning to the paintings, even if they are painfully familiar to everyday life.
It’s hard to see at first but the connections are there. After all, now often can we go per text without a ‘winkface’? That and there’s little denying the connection between the screaming emoji face and Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’. In some cases, it would see life really does imitate art. Or maybe it’s the other way around?
