I’ve been
living in York give or take for three years now, and though a typical student's weekdays is chock-a-block with contact hours, responsibilities and other various shenanigans, I try to use
any free time I have within an inch of their short lives especially with graduation looming so closely. So far I’ve paid a visit
to the typical venues popular with the tourist masses from the likes of the Jorvik Centre, to the Dungeons, got lost in York maze, mingled with coursemates in the few bookshops York has to offer, wined and dined at many of the fine food venues and had plenty of conversations with taxi drivers ( that Yorkshire charm though). I know that
none of this is going to impress anyone; I’ll need to go back over the next few months and explore more of those winding lanes to find anything worth dishing insider knowledge out on.
What I have found may not be
particularly revolutionary, but is pretty lovely. One such place is Crumbs Cupcakery. Crumbs and Cupcakery encapsulates York in its finest - quaint, darling and cutesy; it's a vintage tearoom which serves colossal
slices of their wonderful cakes and whips up creatively inspired cupcakes, all in an
impeccably Instagrammable aesthetic.
What I have tried however, is a slice of the
incredibly decadent vivid red velvet chocolatecake that draws a continuos line of intrigued tourists
and cake lovers through the door on College Street behind the Minster. These cakes are
the cats pyjamas of confectionery: boasting the likes of an array of classic and deluxe flavours and they certainly are GBBO showstopper material. Just one slice
will prove tough going for even the most seasoned sugar binger (i.e. me), but
my God will the ten litres of water you’ll suddenly need to consume afterwards
be worth it.
This stuff is as saccharine and indulgent as it comes, and if you
have a sweet tooth, it’d be pretty silly of you to pass the chance at anything this delicious.
